RT-Mart

RT MART has opened right across from my apartment. Maybe hard to comprehend life in a country like China unless you experience it first hand. You learn the real meaning of "developing country". in 2008 when I came here my whole life changed... Everyday items like Fresh Milk, Cheese, Butter, Bread, Steak, Sausages, Cereal, Chocolate ( that didn't taste like wax) and much more, just didn't exist in Yichang... Bigger cities, Yes, But not here. Now I can find all these things relatively easily...especially with RT MART across the road. And other things like Christmas were non existent... Well pretty much... And now there is Christmas spirit and crazy shopping lol...
A whole new road near my school and apartment has finally been finished (it's taken nearly all of four years) and its awesome. There are now proper seats in my ferry. Air con and heating in some of the buses. Cafes that sell real coffee.
The times, they are a changing :-)

A Beautiful Clear Winters Night

Life has been crazy these past few weeks, today I didn't stop until now.... Very very busy and tomorrow I have to recall on my muso skills and perform a drum solo and duet with my little Carol. We are part of the New Year Teachers Show. Last minute addition so we only rehearsed tonight but we have a lesson every week so I think it should be fine.
Braved the chilly weather to venture onto the balcony to bring in the washing ( thats been hanging for 3 or 4 days) and saw a perfectly clear (all be it cold) winters evening. Nice :-)

Neo-Paws

I actually fought the idea of shoes on my dog for a couple of years now, because being a foreigner in a comparatively small city (by chinese standards) I felt we already draw enough attention to ourselves as it is. I walk Moli a couple of times everyday which for me has been good in a few ways. We are continually stopped by people who want to talk about her, so my Chinese language has improved ten fold and she has taken a good bulk of the attention away from me...HOORAY! But walking a dog around the streets of China can be like walking through a mine field. The habitual practice the Chinese people have of spitting everywhere, vomiting, peeing and pooing their little kids and babies on the spot wherever, construction on every street, holes, metal, oil and food scraps from street side food vendors, broken glass... All this stuff littering the roads and pavements... The list goes on forever. I couldn't live with the thought of what my dog was walking through everyday any longer, we share a shoebox size apartment and .....well you can imagine. Also I obviously had to keep carrying her over hazardous areas of glass and building sites..... SO ....shoes became a necessity. I tried the cheap ones from the pet shop, looked cool but slipped around on her feet and fell apart after a month or so. So i researched on the internet and found Neo-Paws came highly recommended. Well just look at the photos, she loves them, I love them for the piece of mind they give me. And... Do we get more attention? Well yes, but its even more directed at Moli than me now. The most common thing I used to hear a hundred times a day was "look at the foreigner", which became 50/50 With "look at the cute dog" and now the most common thing by far is "look at the cute dog wearing boots".

Yay China gets Christmasy

When I first came here in 2008, there were very little signs of Christmas to be found... But like everything in China, things change in the blink of an eye. My first Christmas saw me struggle to find any decorations,a tree or anything... In the early blogs there is a funny story of my bus ride home with a fully decorated tree in my hands that I found and bought at a stationary shop lol. But now there are signs of Christmas everywhere, doubled with the fact its winter, it's easy to re-find your Christmas spirit :-)

City living

A day of new trials, Moli's groomer seems to have disappeared, so whilst i anxiously wait whilst a new groomer has her, I'll try something new myself. A new cafe near my place called "slow life coffee and book". I always think the safest bet to trying a new coffee is to go the "latte"...
This cafe is in a more interesting location than my usual cafe. If you choose to sit outside you can watch the busy walking street or go inside for a very hip cosy hangout...and yes there are also books to read, free wifi and some guitars laying about :-)...and the coffee, VERY NICE!. I'll be back here again soon.

VPN ASTRIL ROCKS

For a couple of years now I've used Astrill VPN service. If you don't already know, they've just released a shiny new iPhone app so you can simply and quickly access it in pretty much the same way as on you can on your PC ( actually more easily I think)Some other advantages seem to be combating the narcoleptic iPhone behaviour in the sense that it no longer seems to drops the connection when your iPhone constantly goes into deep slumber... Yippee

UPDATE: VPN in China is kind of crucial. Without it you can't access anything to do with google, Facebook and all the other things we are used to. Majority of the time I was there I did use Astrill, however, best search around and find which one is best at the specific time you are travelling. Sometimes one gets blocked and doesn't work and you have to find an alternative. Some are free, some are not....just find what works best for you.

Living fully in the present moment

Look at my dogs face as she literally flys as she runs. So happy, so there in the moment.

I love watching, not only my baby, but other dogs fully enjoying their walks. Really gives me much happiness. - Posted using BlogPress from my iPhone

Laozi (Tzu) Say

If you correct your mind, the rest of your life will fall into place.
This is actually one of the photo's I took of The Great Wall...

我的步行街 !My Walking Street

I just love the atmosphere in walking street. Some areas of walking street are not busy and are a little hidden away. Other areas are bustling with activity, the best food you've ever tasted and fun things to do.
 Summer Rain
These noodles are superb and right downstairs from my apartment.
 More great food

My Chinese home

It is easy to get caught up in the difficulties of living here and become blind to the beauties of living here. I'm proud to say I still see the beauty! This is a pic I took country side (my school side) of the Yangtze river.

Walking home in the rain

The welcome sight of my ride home after a long, hard days work at school. Its cold and its raining, but its beautiful. Iv'e added some quotes I love to my photo's.

And once I'm back home side of the river, I walk up the never ending daily stairs and this is my grand walkway home. I'm improving, I can even see beauty and warmth in cold and wet...

Satisfied with her mornings play!

Totally satisfied after playing madly and being slobbered all over at the park yesterday morning. Have to say I took her for a bath after lunch.

Some obvious differences

1) Hot Soya Bean Milk at KFC in place of Hot Chocolate. 2) The Rubbish man has quite a different kind of job here, I'm guessing ours would go on strike if they had this job. 3) They love stairs so much that if you wanna leave Yichang by train, you gotta climb all these with your luggage before you can depart.... - Posted using BlogPress from my iPhone

Yichang history

Its only taken me four years or so to actually go to this monument to find out exactly what it's about. It's always caught my eye since my arrival here because it has a huge purple anchor sticking in the top of it, and being a Freo Dockers supporter, I've always thought it a bit if an omen, like a sign I came to the right city, lol. I have tried to find out what it represented but my friends didn't know and just because my bus routes don't actually stop close by, well I've just not ever made it to the actual spot, just seen from up on the bridge as I pass by. Last Saturday, the weather was gorgeous, so Moli and I decided to walk a fair length of riverside park, all the way up to the monument and the foot of the bridge to have a gander. 1938 and the Anchor is a monument representing Yichangs role in moving people and machinery, goods etc around China at a very scary time whilst Japan were invading the country and carrying out events such as the Nanjing massacre. Wuhan and Yichang itself were in a dangerous situation but Yichang became a major port in a time of crisis. It states for a period of 3 years "37 - 40" Yichang sent civilians to the rear, soldiers to the front and cargo to the west. 1938 was a particularly tense time as the country tried to protect Wuhan. Within 40 days a whole years worth of traffic, goods, equipment and people (civilians and soldiers, injured, orphaned children, businessmen, celebrities) all came to Yichang to be evacuated. An amazing effort indeed!

Chinese Cold remedies recipes

So with the cold weather setting in here in China, I'm already getting more than a fair shares worth of colds. I like to turn to a few of the traditional Chinese home remedies to treat rather than the dreaded hospital visits and antibiotic drips. A favourite for me coz it tastes so damn nice is "ginger coca cola"... And its so easy even i can do it. Chop up some ginger, add it to the coca cola and bring to boil, simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring to check it doesn't caramalize. DRINK, whilst hot( careful not to burn yourself) Delicious, clears the sinuses and warms you up. Its even popular here just as a winter drink in restaurants. It really warms you up. Its also pretty effective for upset tummies. It is an ancient traditional recipe, but obviously years ago they used brown sugar not coca cola 😉. The other useful and tasty remedy is "steamed pears with rock sugar". This is for chesty coughs etc. Now I've never seen rock sugar before I came to China so I don't know how available it is? It looks like big lumps of crystal. Anyway dice the pear and put into a small bowl with quite a few pieces rock sugar. Stand the bowl into a saucepan with about an inch of water in it and bring to the boil, lower to a simmer and put the lid on. Steam for about 10 -15 minutes. Carefully and skillfully remove bowl from within saucepan, eat and enjoy ( careful... Very hot). The rock sugar melts through the steaming pear making a tasty syrup. Apart from the fact that both these recipes are tasty, they do in fact seem to be quite effective. Disclaimer : these are just recipes i find useful and recommended by friends. Use with your own discretion.

Hmmmm

On one of my walks around a different old area of Yichang, I happened along this window. It's had me imagining all kinds of scenarios about its story. Why does it have Russia written on it, when I'm clearly in China ;-) and why is Russia written in English and not Chinese? I'm thinking there's a whole movie behind this window and door.

Yep she is definitely Chinese

One thing people often mention about China is the mess people make at the dinner tables in restaurants. Rubbish, bones, wrapping from chopsticks, bowls etc is all over the tables and floors. I've always been fascinated by Chinese peoples ability to filter out fish bones in their mouths, no hands needed, just put in a mouthful, seemingly swirl it around, then spit out neat clean fish bones. I just stay away from fish here, river fish has too much danger involved ;-) My dog being 100% Chinese born but with my western influences still regularly shows her Chinese side. Stepping or jumping over wet patches on the pavement often amuses me, but she has the fish bone skill too, it's just that she does it with all the biscuits she doesn't want. Check out this video of her causing the Chinese dining mess by skillfully cleaning the chicken and rice from her biscuits whilst in her mouth and then discarding the biscuits on the floor.

Siesta time

I've never really got into the lunchtime nap habit especially now that when I'm at school I don't have the luxury of popping next door to my apartment. As you can see its not a problem for my Chinese teacher friends who can sleep anywhere anytime. They usually get about 45 minutes kip in... Quite amazing really.

Because I can

Never have I enjoyed baked beans on toast as much as tonight... Why? Because I can. I will probably have a strange dessert of weet-bix and cream why? Because I can. The side dish of Camembert just as is, no crackers or extra bits.... Amazing! May seem like a strange meal for you when you can get it every day but here in a 2nd tier Chinese city.... This is a new big development in the life of a foreigner. This is just a small sample of whats on offer.... We now have all kinds of meat cuts including lamb chops... Wow! Frozen Cheesecakes, apple pies etc all kinds of spices OMG. Unbelievable. Thank you metro store for coming into my life :-)))))

Colours of China

Whilst the river is looking the reddest I have ever seen it in the 4 + years I have been here, it stands out nearly as much as my white foreign face. On a daily basis I am asked which country I come from, but usually before I answer they throw in a guess. By far the number one nationality I get asked if I am is French... I really have no idea why? Coming in second would be American and then a lot further back in equal third place would be British and Canadian but today I just straight out of the cuff was asked if I am British or German ?????? Go figure???? When I reply no no no, I'm Australian they all go wow, beautiful country, with the exception of kids who have no idea what an Australian is... True!
Where in America is Australia mummy? Ok, I made up the last sentence but the rest is true!

Flying with eagles

A couple of days ago, on a beautiful sunny late afternoon, I grabbed Moli and we headed to the park. It was stunning weather and whilst we had our usual fun walking, playing and just sitting watching the world go by, we became witness to a remarkable sight, one that I will surely always remember. Chinese people take their kite flying very seriously and we sat watching the technique of an old man spinning his eagle kite around in circles to catch the air and take flight, unlike our running along to catch a breeze, I was fascinated to watch. He wasn't having too much success as his eagle😉kept flying in to the branches of a nearby tree. At that point a young whipper snapper in his twenties rocked up and began to assemble his much flashier eagle kite and using the same spinning round the head technique, he was much quicker in gaining success as his bird took flight. Whilst this was going on the old mans persistence paid off and soon the two eagles were soaring. The youngsters eagle hit some kind of turbulence and took a plummet back to earth causing him to do some running repairs but the old mans eagle soared higher and higher. Ive never ever seen a kite flown so wonderfully high and free. It was at this point, whilst I was marveling at the kite flying abilities of this old man when things really got interesting. You could easily be fooled into thinking it was a real eagle up there soaring around, same size and quite real to look at, I certainly have been fooled in the past as there are many eagles in Yichang... But then it happened, into the scene flew the real thing, a real eagle ( maybe also fooled or maybe just having some fun too) decided to join in the fun. I and other lucky passers by watched as the old man came as close as you possibly can to actually flying with an eagle. They played in the sky, circling and diving, soaring and frolicking high in the clear blue sky. The more youthful kite flyer left the sky to the old man and joined us to watch in amazement. I exclaimed Wow! ( well the Chinese equivalent anyway) to which the old man looked at me smiling and just replied "好玩儿", which is just like us saying much fun or very amusing.
After about 15 minutes the real eagle gave up the game and left. Moli and I carried on our walk home along the river and even had the added bonus of the sun lowering itself into the river. Definitely 好玩儿!

New Links

Just a mention about a couple of new things here on the blog. Over in my Favorites list to your right, is a new favorite "Streamzoo". This is the place where I stream all my photos to. It really is cool. If your wanting to checkout my stream you can search for @chopsooy. I will add a slideshow when blogger will make it work ;-)
The other mention is a cool website full of amazingly cool resources for learning Chinese called "Study More Chinese". I've added a badge right over there on your right...It's free and full of all kinds of goodies to sink your teeth into if you're in pursuit of learning this complex language.

Chinese BBQ

Went with my friend out walking our dogs tonight. We went down to the river and sat exchanging what we know of each others language whilst the dogs played. 8.30 ish when we left home for the river and still was very hot. After enjoying the evening on the river bank We then headed back homewards stopping for late night BBQ meal... So nice, really very yummy, mega spicy hot, but delicious. Gonna add a picture I've previously taken of the BBQ man where we ate tonight...真好吃的!

I'm back

Ok, ok ok... I went to tumblr but to be honest it never really agreed with me. I prefer the blogger layouts much more. I haven't even been blogging but.... If for no other reason than that I find it therapeutic, I'm gonna start up here again😊. So what's been happening... Well I'm still in China, same city, same job, but new apartment. Living in the heart of the city gives me a much much richer living experience. I've currently been going through a loving photography phase, something I've always enjoyed but with the arrival of iphonograhy and apps such as Streamzoo, I'm really loving it. I re edited old pics and taken shiny new ones and share them at Streamzoo...you can look me up there @chopsooy . I will no doubt put some on here too😊 I've been back to Australia for my yearly visit back home, enjoyed seeing my mum and dad sooo much. Also enjoyed kinda restarting some old friendships. Please feel free to check in here, you may just find I've bothered to rant or rave about some particular aspect of China life. This is a photo I took in Dehang a few years back but recently edited. It's in Henan province, a lovely place.

Appreciation

I really appreciate peoples kind comments and it's wonderful to have followers on my blog. Because of the lack of Android blogger apps, I mostly blog at www.livingthemiddleway.tumblr.com now, if I could link the two blogs it would be wonderful. Thanks again.
